           Rebecca Gómez obtained her Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from New Mexico State University in 1995 and completed a post-doctoral position at the University of Arizona before taking her first faculty position at Johns Hopkins University in 1999. She returned to the University of Arizona in 2001 where she is presently an Associate Professor.  Dr. Gómez directs the Child Cognition Laboratory, housed in the Department of Psychology, and funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. 

 

           Dr.  Gómez studies learning and language acquisition in infants, children, and adults.  She also studies memory updating and the role of sleep in infant learning. Dr. Gómez was the recipient of an NSF CAREER award, has been an associate editor for Cognition, a leading journal in the field of cognitive science, and has served on the editorial boards of Psychological Science and Language Learning and Development

 

           Dr. Gómez  also takes an active role mentoring undergraduate students in their preparation for careers as scientists and teachers.   In her free time she runs desert trails in and around Tucson with her Australian Shepherd and trains for local running races with a local running group.  She also enjoys cooking the cuisines of the world.
