The Southwest Information Gateway (SIG) was begun in 2003 as a Prop 301- supported information technology/information sciences project. The faculty of the Southwest Land, Culture, and Society program of the University of Arizona identified a need for a guide for use of the wide variety of online resources relating to Southwest archaeological, ethnographic, geographical, and historical sources.

SIG was created to address this need. The main part of this project is an online, searchable, annotated catalog of web resources related to Southwestern US/Northwestern Mexico studies. The catalog is supplemented by online tutorials, which are designed to help researchers (novice and experienced alike) evaluate web resources. Several archaeological databases are also available online under the auspices of SIG.

At the beginning of Spring Semester 2005, SIG went live. Since that time, we have been adding to and refining the database, creating alternate entries to the catalog (such as the "Browse by Map" option), and creating online tutorials. We are constantly adding resources to SIG, so check back soon for more developments!
