Readings: Required readings are given below.  Readings in brackets [[   ]] are required for those registered for Psyc 578 and recommended for those registered for Psyc 478.  We will be reading material from a variety of sources.  Chapters will be required from an excellent online text called Basics of Sleep Behavior (http://www.sleephomepages.org/sleepsyllabus/).

All other readings will be available from the course web page electronic reserves and can be accessed with the password: sleep  The readings are listed alphabetically by title, so be sure to look in the syllabus to see what readings you are looking for.

The course POLIS web page can be found at the following url:

https://polis.arizona.edu/courseHomesite.do?semester=spring05&course=PSYC_478_578-1

You can also connect to the POLIS web page (https://polis.arizona.edu). Click on Spring 2005.  There will be a list of Spring 2005 courses that use POLIS for web pages.  Scroll down to Psyc 478_578 and link to the course page.  If you do not have home internet access, there are a number of computer stations on campus including those at the main library.

Everyone should put their email address on the course page so that course announcements can be sent to you directly.  Those who add their email addresses to ClickMail on the course POLIS page will receive a bonus of 2 points on the first midterm exam.

Exams:  There are three exams: two exams in the first half of the semester and a final exam.  Each exam is composed of 30 to 40 multiple-choice questions taken from lectures and readings plus two or three short essay questions.  Last year’s first exam will be posted on the course web page so that you will be able to test your knowledge and see the type of questions that will be asked.  The exams are not graded on a curve.  The highest score by an undergraduate in the class will be considered 100%.  An A = 90 - 100%; B = 80 - 89%; C = 70 - 79%; D = 60 - 69%.  The exams are not cumulative.  The first two exams will each be weighted 30% and the final exam will be weighted 40%.  There is no extra credit.  However, improvement from the midterm exams to the final will result in the final being weighted more heavily (50% rather than 40%).

For those taking Psyc 478H or Psyc 578, there will be two or three discussion session meetings (TBA).  An 8 to 10 page review paper (double-spaced) is required on a topic of your choice approved by Professor Bootzin.  The papers are due in Professor Bootzin’s mailbox by 5 pm on May 5th.
