John E. Schwarz, born in New York City, is a graduate of Oberlin
College where he received his Bachelor's Degree and Indiana University
where he received his Ph.D. He also was educated at The London School
of Economics and Political Science and L'Institut d'Études
Politiques of the University of Paris.
He worked in Washington on the staff of Senator Birch Bayh of Indiana
before joining the faculty of political science at the University
of Minnesota in 1966. In 1970 he moved to the University of Arizona.
He has won the Danforth Teaching Award and has published five books
along with articles in numerous professional journals as well as
outlets for the interested public. In 1995 he became Chair of the
Faculty at the
University of Arizona and also served as faculty representative
on the Arizona Board of Regents in 1996-97. His latest book, just
published in January 2005, is entitled Freedom Reclaimed: Rediscovering
the American Vision. A prior book, Illusions of Opportunity:
The American Dream in Question, was placed in nomination for
the Pulitzer Prize for 1998. Two of his other books, America's
Hidden Success and The Forgotten Americans, have been
placed on a list of the best fifty books on American social policy
during the past half century. In 1984, America's Hidden Success
was named through the American Political Science Association as
one of the best books of the year in public policy. He has also
published articles and essays in The Atlantic Monthly, The New
Republic, The Nation, The American Prospect, The New York Times,
and The Wall Street Journal, among others. He is married
with three children, all grown.
