APPLICATION PROCEDURES
Admission to the philosophy Ph.D. program is the joint responsibility of
the Graduate College (submit online) and the Philosophy
Department, so applicants must satisfy the requirements of both and
must submit materials to both.Review of application files will begin December
15th. To ensure full consideration for financial support, completed applications
must be received by January 2nd. Early submission is encouraged.
Standard Mail --Application Process--Department
of Philosophy
Please send the following items to the Philosophy
Department:
- the Philosophy Graduate Study Application;
- a completed copy of the Graduate Study Application
(the one you submitted online);
- a completed Graduate Assistantship form;
- an official transcript with the registrar's
seal from each undergraduate and, if applicable, graduate institution
attended (do not send to the graduate college, if you are admitted we
will send over your official transcripts to the graduate college)
- three confidential letters of recommendation
(no forms provided) from professors in previous philosophy courses in
sealed envelopes (your own envelope with the professor's signature over
the flap;
- a sample of written philosophical work (no
length requirement, send your best work);
- a statement of purpose;
- and a self-addressed and stamped postcard
(if would you would like notification of receiving your application).
- a copy of GRE scores that were sent
to you (the student) see note below regarding official scores
Note: Please have an official copy of
your GRE scores sent directly to the University.
Note: Do
not put your writing sample or any other application materials in clear
folders, page protectors, etc. It just takes more time to take them out,
our file folders will not accommodate such things.
Note: If possible, please send all the
necessary departmental materials in the same envelope in order to insure
that your application is reviewed in a timely manner. Sending material
(e.g., letters of recommendation or writing sample) under separate cover
slows the evaluation process.
