The Arizona graduate program in philosophy is known for its intense concentration on both the philosophical development and the professional preparation of its graduate students, and for its exceptionally congenial and supportive atmosphere. In the 2000 National Doctoral Program Survey (based on graduate student responses), the Arizona graduate program in philosophy was ranked first in the US in overall student satisfaction, overall practices, program climate, and on a number of other measures.

Areas of Excellence

Among analytic philosophy programs, Arizona excels in the philosophy of mind, social and political philosophy, philosophy of the cognitive sciences, epistemology, and ancient Greek philosophy. Arizona is also very strong in the philosophy of language, metaphysics, ethics, the philosophy of science (including the philosophy of physics and mathematics), modern philosophy, logic, and the philosophy of law.

Arizona's philosophy graduate program is consistently ranked among the best in the United States. The members of the faculty are very accessible to graduate students and are interested in their philosophical development and professional success.

Dissertations and Placement Record

In recent years, Arizona's Ph.D.'s have been hired at Oxford, Michigan, Berkeley, Yale, the University of London, Notre Dame (2), and many other fine colleges and universities. The large majority of Ph.D.'s have obtained tenure-track positions. The program's successes in finding attractive jobs for its students have been extraordinary when compared with peer philosophy programs, especially if one considers the recent lean job market.

The Department of Philosophy welcomes and encourages applications from minority students.
