Under the Student Disciplinary Procedures, the "Vice President for Student Affairs" is defined as "the administrative officer bearing such title, related title, or his/her designee" (ABOR 5-402(B)(4)) and such person is charged with the duty to review recommendations made by the Hearing Board (ABOR 5-403(F)). Under the Student Code of Conduct, the "Dean of Students" is defined as "the administrative officer bearing this or similar title and includes his/her designee" (ABOR 5-308(E)(3)) and such person is charged with the duty to investigate and discipline code of conduct violations (ABOR 5-403(C)).

The Vice President for Student Affairs' duties include those that had previously been assigned to the Vice President for Campus Life, including the duty to review recommendations made by the Hearing Board as a Vice President for Student Affairs or related title. In order to avoid any confusion related to the definition of Dean of Students in the Student Code of Conduct with the official duties of the Vice President for Student Affairs, the position of Assistant Vice Provost for Student Affairs and Senior Associate Dean of Students is designated as the administrative officer who will supervise and oversee the duties required of the Dean of Students set forth in the Code. This designation is intended to remove any appearance of a conflict of interest from the two separate roles required of the Vice President for Student Affairs and the Dean of Students.
