| Student
Advocacy
We advocate for UA students in a variety of ways, including
everyday consultation about topics ranging from roommate
issues to classroom interactions. We provide wellness
checks, information and referral services and respond
to individual student crises.
The UA
Health and Safety Protocol is used when a student
is involved in an emergency. This process facilitates
the process of sharing information with parents, and
the student’s support network, in order to provide the resources needed to help
the student resolve the issue. In order for this process
to be effective, it is extremely important that students
identify their emergency contact information on Student
Link.
Wellness
checks are available from the Dean of Students Office
when students are concerned about the behavior, health
or welfare of a fellow student. We urge students to
contact us so we may make the proper inquiries and refer
the student to the appropriate campus service.
Sometimes it helps to have an objective
third party bring students together to talk in a safe
environment with the goal of resolving a conflict. This
process of dispute mediation guides students toward
resolution, placing primary emphasis on arriving at
their own solution. Students shouldn’t hesitate
to use this approach for roommate disputes, communication
/ relationship problems and organizational disputes.
The UA is a large community with a
myriad of policies and procedures, and not surprisingly
students often have questions as they navigate within
this community. We are happy to assist students in understanding
and interpreting University policy.
When the Dean of Students Office can’t
directly assist students, we identify where to connect
them to address these questions and concerns. This connection
may be with a faculty member, a particular department,
or available campus service.
