In December 1984, the University of Arizona Division of Student Affairs created the Centennial Achievement Award to be presented annually at the December Commencement. This award is given to one male and one female student who are graduating seniors during the current academic year.

The primary criterion for selection is evidence of outstanding personal growth. Cumulative grade point average may be considered but should not be the sole criterion for selection. Preference is given to:

1. Individuals who have demonstrated integrity.
2.   Individuals who have overcome enormous challenges to achieve a college education.
3.   Individuals who have made a contribution to self, community, and family.
4.   Ethnic minorities who are the first in their families to graduate from college.

The award is a monetary award of $250 accompanied by an engraved plaque, which is presented to each recipient at the December Commencement. The Vice President for Campus Life provides the funding for this award. Additionally, a permanent plaque has been prepared which has engraved plates of past recipients' names. The plaque is located in the Dean of Students Office, Old Main 203.

  1. above-average scholastic ability
  2. citizenship
  3. leadership
  4. promise for the future

During the fall of 1987, the Graduate College and the Division of Campus Life established awards to recognize outstanding achievement and contributions of minority graduate students at the University of Arizona. Awards are given to one male and one female student working in a master's degree program and one male and one female working at the doctoral level during the current academic year.

The primary purpose for these awards is to recognize outstanding achievement and contributions by Graduate College students and to provide financial assistance and recognition to encourage these students to complete their graduate studies. Each award consists of $500 cash and an engraved plaque.

Criterion for Award
Recipients must be Graduate College students who:

  • are U.S. citizens
  • members of a traditionally underrepresented group (i.e., African American, Hispanic, Native American)
  • have completed at least 18 units of graduate credit in a degree program at the specified level at the University of Arizona

Preference will be given to those ethnic minority students who are the first in their family working toward an advanced degree from a university. Previous recipients are not eligible.

Consideration will be given to:

1. Academic achievements (i.e. scholarships, fellowships, honors)
2. Scholarly achievements (i.e. conference papers, research grants, publications)
3. Community/campus service including leadership positions
4. Professional affiliations
5. Experience in the workplace or university
