The main goal of this program is to train graduate students in research areas at the interface of the biological, mathematical and physical sciences, working with interdisciplinary faculty teams. Students, enrolled in graduate programs in either the mathematical and physical sciences or the biological sciences, participate in collaborative activities that cross the traditional boundaries between these disciplines.

Originally started under a National Science Foundation IGERT grant, the Biology, Mathematics and Physics Initiative (BMPI) is now funded by the University's BIO5 Institute for Collaborative BioResearch as part of their Quantitative Biology Consortium
