The Biology, Mathematics and Physics Initiative (BMPI) is a multidisciplinary program devoted to research and education at the interface of Biology, Mathematics and Physics. Its goal is to bring together graduate students, postdocs and faculty from a diversity of participating departments at the University of Arizona to advance research and education in the biological and biomedical sciences through the application of mathematics and physics. At the same time BMPI has a "bidirectional" goal, namely to stimulate basic research in mathematics and physics in response to challenging questions from the life sciences. BMPI is funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation.
BMPI provides graduate fellowships for students entering, or pursuing research in, participating graduate programs. Supported students collectively participate in a variety of innovative training activities. BMPI is eager to recruit talented undergraduates into the participating graduate programs and supports a variety of recruitment activities. Opportunities are also available for postdoctoral fellowships. Academic profiles of some of our recent graduates illustrate the breadth and success of BMPI. In addition to graduate and postdoctoral fellowships, BMPI also sponsors workshops and conferences.
BMPI supports training in many different research areas involving faculty from many academic units across the The University of Arizona campus.
