Jay Stauss (Jamestown S’Klallam; Ph.D., 1972, Washington State University) served as Director of AIS for the past decade. Fall, 2002 he made the transition back to the faculty. His most recent books include, Native American Studies In Higher Education, Alta Mira Press, Walnut Creek (2002), a text co-edited with Duane Champagne, Director of the American Indian Studies Center at UCLA, The Jamestown S'Klallam Story: Rebuilding a Northwest Coast Indian Tribe, published by the Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe, 1033 Old Blyn Highway, Sequim, WA (2002). He is focused on the Indian Shaker Church in the Pacific Northwest.

Dr. Stauss is the co-administrator of a multi-year grant from The Economic Research Service in the; US Department of Agriculture which provides funding for one of five national; research centers. This small grants program provides research funding for tribal college faculty interested in the relationship between food assistance programs on reservations and family poverty.

The University of Arizona’s American Indian Studies Program in partnership with the Native Peoples Technical Assistance Office (NPTAO) is now in its tenth year of partnership with the USDA Economic Research Service to facilitate research on the impact of food assistance programs on American Indian reservations.  To learn more about this important project go to http://www.nptao.arizona.edu/ and then click on the RESEARCH button on the left.
