Description: To assist graduate students in the humanities and related social sciences* in the last year of Ph.D. dissertation writing. This program aims to encourage timely completion of the Ph.D. Applicants must be prepared to complete their dissertations within the period of their fellowship tenure or shortly thereafter. Funding source: Five College ABD Fellowship Program
Description: The Five College Fellowship Program provides a year in residence at one of the campuses for graduate students who have completed all requirements for the doctoral degree except the dissertation (ABD). The chief goal of the program is to promote diversity in American higher education by enabling more scholars of underrepresented groups and/or unique interests, experiences, or histories to embark on an academic career with their doctoral degree completed. The selection of Fellows is carried out by the hosting institution, where the Fellow will reside within an academic department, and be provided by the hosting campus with a stipend, office space, and other benefits. Description: The Udall Foundation awards two one-year fellowships of up to $24,000 to doctoral candidates whose research concerns U.S. environmental public policy and/or environmental conflict resolution and who are entering their final year of writing the dissertation. Previous fellows' fields of study include political science; economics; government; environmental science, policy and management; ecology; environmental justice; regional planning; geography; natural resource policy; and environmental analysis and design. Interdisciplinary projects are particularly welcome. Fellows must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals or permanent residents, and their dissertation research must pertain to U.S. environmental policy.

Description: Fellowships will provide support for nine to twelve months of dissertation research. The IDRF program is committed to scholarship that advances knowledge about non-U.S. cultures and societies grounded in empirical and site-specific research (involving fieldwork, research in archival or manuscript collections, or quantitative data collection). The program promotes research that is at once located in a specific discipline and geographical region and engaged with interdisciplinary and cross-regional perspectives. Description: The Spencer Dissertation Fellowships support individuals whose dissertations show potential for bringing fresh and constructive perspectives to the history, theory, or practice of formal or informal education anywhere in the world. Recipients of the fellowships will receive $25,000 to support completion of the dissertation. This amount must be expended within a time limit of up to two years and in accordance with the work plan provided by the candidate in the application. Application deadline, November 1, 2006.

Funding source: UCLA Institute of American Cultures Graduate and Predoctoral Fellowship in Ethnic Studies
Description: Current UCLA students with a demonstrated interest in ethnic studies are eligible to apply for graduate/predoctoral fellowships to aid in completion of a thesis or dissertation. The fellowship consists of a $18,000 stipend and all in-state fees. Applications are available in October, due by January 12 for African American and Chicana/o studies and April 2 for American Indian and Asian American studies.

Description: The Woodrow Wilson Dissertation Fellowship in Women’s Studies encourages original and significant research about women that crosses disciplinary, regional, or cultural boundaries. Fellowships are provided to Ph.D. candidates at institutions in the United States who will complete their dissertations during the fellowship year. The October 10 deadline to apply for 2007 Women’s Studies Fellowships has now passed, and the competition is closed to new applications. Fellows will be named in late January 2007.
