My name is Martha Dailey. I am Diné (Navajo) from Shiprock, New Mexico.  I am of the Towering House People born for Tangle Clan. My paternal grandfather is the Black-Streaked-Wood People and my maternal grandfather is the Salt Clan. Currently I reside in Tucson, Arizona but because I was born and raised on the Navajo Nation, it is customary for me to introduce myself by kinship.
I am a second-year graduate student in the Master of Arts program in American Indian Studies (AIS). I received my Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Arizona in English with a Creative Writing emphasis as well as an undergraduate minor in AIS. At this time, I am in the final stages of composing and compiling data for my thesis which will focus on the history of the Shiprock Lady Chieftains basketball program in New Mexico.
During last year’s election, I received unanimous votes by my peers to represent the student body in the AIS program. This means that not only am I a representative of our student organization, but also that I am a representative of the students in AIS. I do not take this lightly. Being a representative means that I am responsible for leading by example, exploring opportunities, and collaborating with others in the support of our mission and vision of the AIS program. I continually keep in mind the philosophies and principles of the previous generation to do what I can to find my purpose in the AIS program and to support my peers to strive for their purpose as well. Through our connections with each other, the faculty, the administration and also our surroundings, we work to keep the foundations of indigenous knowledge strong so that we may continue to build on the scholarship and research necessary in a field as unique as American Indian Studies.

Chrissy Birong
Recording Secretary

I received my BA in Native American Studies with minors in Sociology and History from the University of Montana.  Then I came to the University of Arizona to earn my M.A. in AIS, emphasizing in law and policy.  I am from Vermont and currently live in Tucson with my dog, Guinness.

Vice Chair

Bonjour! Hallo! Buongiorno tutti! Hi!
I am the French voice in the AIS department and Graduate Student Council. I love languages and am fascinated by social processes. I received my Master’s degree in American Civilization from the Université de Tours, France in 2006 and taught French at the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2007-2008. It was cold but a great experience… I am glad I finally settled in a hot and sunny place, something I secretly hoped would someday happen for 25 years before moving to Tucson last fall. My research is on Native American activism and leadership. I am the Vice-President of the Council for 2008-2009 and will be working on creating a website for it soon. I hope to see you all at our council meetings.
Aurélie.
