  Title Archives of Women of the Southwest
  Description The "Archives of Women of the Southwest" is part of the special collections at DeGolyer Library, within the Central University Libraries at Southern Methodist University.  "Archives of Women of the Southwest" documents "the historical experience of women in the Southwest, with special emphasis on Dallas and North Texas, as well as a regional focus that includes Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, and the Spanish Borderlands." The Archives include papers of outstanding Southwestern women including leaders of women's organizations and social/political reform movements, records of women's organizations, and oral history interviews. There is no electronic access to the collection; however, the site provides an alphabetized list of the Archives' contents with descriptions, which often provide introductions to the significant figures represented in the collection.

  Title Arizona-Sonora Documents Online
  Description This web sites provides web access to digital images of archival collections relating to Arizona and Sonora, Mexico that are located at three Arizona repositories: the University of Arizona Library Special Collections; the Arizona Historical Society-Tucson; and the Arizona State Library, Archives, and Public Records. The documents included in Arizona-Sonora Documents Online site primarily date to the 19th and 20th centuries, and deal with subjects such as ranching, mining, land grants, Chinese immigration, border issues, and government. Documents are in both Spanish and English.

  Title Cultural Landscapes of History in Southern Arizona
  Description Scott O'Mack and Rebecca Toupal of Statistical Research Inc (SRI) contributed this lively and well written account of events in southern Arizona beginning in 1539 with the arrival of Europeans. Divided into landscapes of conquest, mobility, social, military and sacred significance, the study also conveys the impact of land use types of mining, farming, ranching on the ecology of southern Arizona. The study was drafted in 2000 for a broad public interested in the Cultural Resource element of the Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan, but contributes to scholarly endeavors with its thorough presentation of the subject matter and extensive list of references of scholarly sources. This resource is in PDF format.

  Title Defining the Southwest
  Description "Defining the Southwest" is a project originally developed as a component of a library web exhibit at the University of Arizona. The site is multidisciplinary, with contributions from University faculty in Southwest literature, folklore, anthropology, archaeology, architecture and linguistics. It attempts to "gather multiple visions of what the Southwest might entail." The site's pages include links to historical maps, bibliographies, and digital images. It also offers links and access to student web projects. This page is a good general resource.

  Title Documentary Relations of the Southwest
  Description Documentary Relations of the Southwest (DRSW) is part of the Office of Ethnohistorical Research at the Arizona State Museum. DRSW contains over 1,500 microfilm reels of documents dating from the 16th Century to 1821, and includes documents relating to Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, and northern Mexico. DRSW provides an index of its holdings (the DRSW Master Index) and a biographical index (Biofile); both are searchable online. Also provided are instructions on using the DRSW and links to other databases related to ethnohistory.

  Description Though it resides on a commercial server, this is the official web page for the El Centro College Southwestern Studies program, which is a part of the El Centro College History department. The web site provides links related to Mexican history and culture, Mexican-American culture, Tejano culture, and Precolumbian peoples of the Southwest. The site offers pages on literature, dance, and music in addition to those on historical phases and general cultural background.

  Title El Morro National Monument
  Description El Morro National Monument, also known as "Inscription Rock" protects over 2,000 inscriptions and petroglyphs, as well as Ancestral Puebloan ruins. The National Park Service site for El Morro National Monument mostly provides background information for tourists planning to visit the park.

  Description The Ethnologue is an online encyclopedia of languages around the world. Each entry provides the language name, its alternate names, number of speakers, location, dialects, and linguistic affiliation, as well as other information if it is available.   Description This site provides information, in Spanish only, on the history of the Mexican state of Chihuahua. Of particular interest is a section on Paquimé, including references for additional information. The site is hosted by the Chihuahua campus of the Tecnológico de Monterrey.

  Title Historic Documents Related to the Navajo treaty of 1868
  Description This is a great selection of transcribed historical documents relating to the Navajo Treaty of 1868 and the Long Walk. The site includes council proceedings, a status report from 1864, the Treaty itself and maps. Particularly interesting is a letter from Lieutenant George Pettis to his wife. It was February 1864 and he talks about the hardships at Fort Sumner and of the march there. An essential collection of documents for anyone interested in this period.

  Title History of the Hopi People
  Description "History of the Hopi People" is a part of the official Hopi tribal website. The page gives a brief but insightful overview of the tribe's history beginning with the ancestral pueblo in the "pre-Hopi" era. It highlights the controversial land disputes that have plagued the Hopi tribe throughout recent centuries and even currently. Another controversial topic discussed is that of foreign influences and their affect on tribal autonomy starting with the Spanish and dating to the United States' occupation.

  Title LISTA: Arizona Historical Society Online Catalog
  Description Established in 1864 by the territorial government, the Arizona Historical Society possesses manuscripts, rare books and maps relating to the prehistory and history of the Southwest. The online catalog is easy to use and provides content summaries with each item record. The site also offers links to other libraries and databases. The AHS also provides a photo reproduction service; details are available in the "Photos" section.

  Title Mission Churches of the Sonoran Desert
  Description A part of the University of Arizona's "Images of the Southwest" site, this site features a fine selection of photographs and some very basic information on the Mission Churches of the Sonoran Desert, founded by Padre Kino. While the site is very basic and slightly out of date, it is a useful place to find out about these attractions on both sides of the border. If you require more information, you can always check out the recommended readings list.

  Title Navajo Code Talkers Dictionary
  Description This gloss of Navajo words used by the Windtalkers during WWII was organized by the Navy Historical Center as a section on their website devoted to Native American participation in the US military. The gloss includes the English meaning, Navajo pronunciation and literal translation.

  Title New Mexico Office of Cultural Affairs-Historic Preservation Division
  Description This page is the site for the Historic Preservation Division of New Mexico. The web page includes lists of funding opportunities and related deadlines. It includes a information about obtaining archaeological permits in New Mexico and eligibility requirements for the National Registry of Historic Places (including a list of sites on the Registry). Forms, information about New Mexico state laws, and contact information are also included. The page is largely devoted to the legal end of conducting archaeological and historical research in New Mexico, and the available resources and applicable requirements associated with the state. Of particular interest is a county-by-county working list for determining which Native American Indian tribes want to be consulted for proposed projects in various geographic parts of New Mexico, and contact information for pueblos and reservations, available in the "Section 106" part of the site.

  Title Phoenix Museum of History
  Description This is the homepage for the Phoenix Museum of History, the museum devoted entirely to the history of the Phoenix area and Salt River Valley. The site includes the various displays that are currently available to the public and gives general museum information. Also provided is general information about the collections (they include ethnographic, anthropological, and historical items from prehistory through the present) and about the archives. Neither the collections or the archives are searchable online. Some educational materials are available in the "education" section.

  Title Rio Nuevo Archaeology and History
  Description "Rio Nuevo Archaeology and History" is the official web site of Tucson's Rio Nuevo project, designed to "recapture and celebrate Tucson's history" through the creation of a new cultural district in downtown Tucson. The project has involved archaeological excavations to understand the prehistoric and historic people who have lived in the Tucson Basin, gathering and recording of historic documents, and community outreach. The site has many pages dedicated to each of these three goals, with archaeological pictures and reports, a detailed "family name" search for digitized census documents, and resources for teaching the history of Tucson, and the greater Southwest.

  Description The San Xavier del Bac Mission web site is currently (September 2004) under construction. However, this site provides interesting narratives on contact between Europeans and the Tohono O'odham as well as information on the history of the mission.   Title School on the Range, The Little Cowpuncher Roundup
  Description "The Little Cowpuncher" was the educational tool of southern Arizona's renowned schoolteacher Eulalia "Sister" Bourne. The Little Cowpuncher was a mimeographed newspaper written and published by Bourne's pupils in the remote ranch schools surrounding the Tucson, Arizona area. These were the schools of Redington, Baboquivari, Sasco, San Fernando and Sopori where the newspaper was written from 1932-1943. The pages contained hand illustrated stories that introduced the readers to different gatherings the students attended such as, The Tucson Rodeo Parade, Annistice Day, and trips to San Xavier del Bac. Also included in the paper were original stories of events at the student's homes, cattle roundups, the planting of crops, and deaths in families.

  Title Smithsonian Institution: Textiles of the Southwest
  Description This online lesson/exhibit explores the weaving traditions of the American Indian and Hispanic residents of the North American Southwest. Included are photographs of woven items in the Smithsonian\'s collections, maps of the region, a timeline, a catalog, and a glossary. Though presented as a lesson plan, this is really more of an online exhibit; little educational support material is included. However, the information and, particularly, photographs certainly could be useful in a classroom setting.

  Title Society for Historical Archaeology
  Description The website for the Society for Historical Archaeology, which was founded in 1967. The Society is an organization of scholars who study the material culture of the modern world, beginning with the 1500s until the present, with a focus on the American continents. The site provides abstracts from the Society's journal, Historical Archaeology, an online version of the society newsletter, and descriptions ofpublications by the Society offered for sale. There are links to other historical archaeology websites as well as links for educational and employment opportunities and a register of professional archaeologists. Though not specific to the southwest, this is an important resource for anyone working in the field of historical archaeology.

  Description The Bloom Southwest Jewish Archives at the University of Arizona Library chronicles the experience of Jewish settlers in the Southwest. The website describes the Archives' mission and holdings, presents several educational online exhibits, provides information about historical research projects, suggests links for futher information, and also contains a very useful bibliography of suggested readings. This site is highly recommended for anyone interested in the history of different ethnic and religious groups that settled the Southwest.

  Title The Arizona State Museum
  Description Established by the territorial government in 1893, the Arizona State Museum is an anthropological museum focusing on the peoples of Arizona and surrounding areas. The museum maintains an archive that contains many manuscripts, field records, maps, final reports artifacts, and the administrative records of the Museum. The museum collections and library holdings catalogs can be searched online; of particular interest is LARC, which includes the bibliographic collections of the ASM Library, Archives, Archaeological Records Office and the Archaeological Repository. The site provides information concerning legal issues and requirements for archaeological and ethnographic research; links to AZSite and other research resources; and a listing of upcoming events and programs.

  Title The Hopi Tribe
  Description This website is the official site for the Hopi Tribe, and is an excellent source for a information about Hopi oral history, language, ceremonies, clans, and tradition. This site also provides information for people interested in visiting the Hopi Reservation, and information about the tribal government. Tribal department contact information is also available, providing employment information and current Tribal information including demographics. Of particular interest to Southwest researchers is the information page for the Cultural Preservation Office, which contains a printable version of the Research Protocol for research at Hopi. This site is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in Hopiland.

  Title Tumacácori National Historic Site
  Description Tumacácori National Historical Park in the upper Santa Cruz River Valley of southern Arizona contains the abandoned ruins of three ancient Spanish colonial missions. The National Park Service site for Tumacácori is primarily aimed at visitors to the park; however it does contain a number of educational resources, including lesson plans (in the "Educational Programs" section); some additional information about the Kino Missions (in the "History and Culture" section); an "In Depth" web site; and a series of photographs (in the "News" section).

  Title Utah State History-Department of Community and Economic Development
  Description This is the Utah Division of State History/Utah State Historical Society site on Utah state history. The site includes pages that link to funding opportunities related to the organization and lists of periodicals and books published by the Historical Society. Pages also link to volunteering and membership options and educational resources available to teachers. Pages include links to legal forms, public archeology resources, and information about the National Register for Historic Places. Perhaps the most interesting part of the site is the page that links to the library/collections section of the organization. This portion includes a list of topics of all newspaper clippings, periodicals, and yearbooks to which the society has access.

  Description "State of Sonora Web" provides an introduction to the history and culture of the state. The site's pages include photographs, information on individual cities and towns, descriptions of regional cuisine, an introduction to indigenous languages in Sonora, and a cultural gallery featuring poems and verses by Sonoran writers and images of Sonoran art. Page titles are presented in Spanish but, since the site is designed to be tourist friendly, many of the pages offer English text. The site provides a good introduction to areas of historical and cultural interest in the state with links to several of the cities' official web sites.

  Title Words & Place: Native Literature from the American Southwest
  Description "Words and Place" provides online access to videos about Native American Southwestern songs and stories. Each program presents one American Indian singer, storyteller or author performing from his/her repertoire in a natural setting in the community. These videos were created for instructional use and have been used in classrooms around the country. The videotapes were produced at the University of Arizona in cooperation with KUAT-TV and funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
