  Title American Indian Tribes of the Southwest
  Description This site, hosted by the American Indian Institute at Arizona State University, provides a list of most of the American Indian tribes in the Southwest, including links to official tribal websites for many Southwestern tribal communities. Some links, however, lead not to official tribal websites, but to other (official) organizations, such as the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center in Albuquerque; other tribes have no links at all. This page is updated infrequently, so be sure to check the "last modified" date.

  Title Arizona Native Scene Online
  Description “Arizona Native Scene Online” provides news on indigenous issues in Arizona and the Southwest, as well as broader national news. The publication offers monthly editions and Online editions are updated during the second week of the month. Arizona Native Scene is an excellent resource for contemporary issues and events in Southwestern indigenous communities. ANS Online also provides a calendar of events, in addition to a pow-wow calendar. Visitors may use these calendars to post relevant events. The site also provides links to Phoenix area, Southwest tribal, and national indigenous resources. As of October 31, 2005, this website was being updated and the calendar and links sections were unavailable.

  Title Council of Indian Nations
  Description The Council of Indian Nations is a National Relief Charities program working in Arizona, New Mexico, California and Utah to help create "Strong, Self-sufficient American Indian Communities." In addition to describing CIN programs, this site’s pages also provide information on the history and culture of Southwestern native peoples, including biographies of historical figures like Cochise and Nampeyo and essays on specific historical topics like the Pueblo Revolt or Indian boarding schools. The site’s page on “Southwest Indians Today” focuses on the issues of contemporary Southwest Indian housing, education, health, and economics.

  Title Defining the Southwest
  Description "Defining the Southwest" is a project originally developed as a component of a library web exhibit at the University of Arizona. The site is multidisciplinary, with contributions from University faculty in Southwest literature, folklore, anthropology, archaeology, architecture and linguistics. It attempts to "gather multiple visions of what the Southwest might entail." The site's pages include links to historical maps, bibliographies, and digital images. It also offers links and access to student web projects. This page is a good general resource.

  Title Edward S. Curtis's The North American Indian
  Description This Library of Congress exhibit provides digital copies of photographs published in The North American Indian, by Edward S. Curtis, and also contains an excellent discussion of the context and significance of Curtis' work. The "Southwest" volume will be of interest to Southwesternists, while the entire collection is a great resource for those interested in American Indian Studies.

  Title Indian Affairs: Laws and Treaties
  Description This is the online version of a 7-volume compilation by Charles J. Kappler in 1904. The text covers U.S. Government treaties with Native Americans from 1778-1883 (Volume II) and U.S. laws and executive orders concerning Native Americans from 1871-1970 (Volumes I, III-VII). Though not specific to the Southwest, treaties with Southwestern tribes are included.

  Title Indian Pueblo Cultural Center
  Description The Home site for the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center in Albuquerque. It serves as the “Gateway to the 19 Pueblos of New Mexico”. The site is dedicated to the “preservation and perpetuation” of Pueblo Indian art, culture and history. The pages provide general information about the Pueblos and the Cultural Center including maps and a calendar of events. The site also offers information about the Pueblo museums, programs, the Institute for Pueblo Indian Studies Archives, and images of the Pueblo Cultural Center murals.

  Title Mending the Circle: a Native American Repatriation Guide
  Description This site provides a free download and on-line copy of this comprehensive guide outlining the repatriation process set forth by the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) of 1990. It includes information on NAGPRA regulations, civil penalties and building a repatriation program. The Smithsonian Institute's official policies and approaches are also covered.

  Title National Museum of the American Indian
  Description Though not specific to the Southwest, the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) web site provides useful information about Native American cultures, including those of the Southwest. In particular, the the Southwestern collections held by the museum include pottery, basketry, and Navajo weavings. The NMAI also provides employment opportunities for tribal members. As of September 2004, the museum in Maryland was just preparing to open, and the web site was not yet very detailed. However, the museum does plan to provide digitized photographs of many of the items in its collection in the near future.

  Title NativeWeb
  Description "NativeWeb is an international, nonprofit, educational organization dedicated to using telecommunications including computer technology and the Internet to disseminate information from and about indigenous nations, peoples, and organizations around the world; to foster communication between native and non-native peoples; to conduct research involving indigenous peoples' usage of technology and the Internet; and to provide resources, mentoring, and services to facilitate indigenous peoples' use of this technology." This website/server provides extensive resources to and about indigenous cultures around the world. The website is primarily in English, but many of the sites linked in the site are in other languages. In the resource section, NativeWeb hosts sections containing Internet Links, Nations Index, and a Geographic Regions Index, as well as information about/links to relevant Books and Music, Legal and Law Issues, and Native technologies (http://nativetech.org). The site is not specifically dedicated to the Southwest, but it does contain resources that pertain to the Southwest. More than anything, this website is a resource for other groups and organizations to disseminate their information in a respectable and credible manner.

  Title New Mexico Office of Cultural Affairs-Historic Preservation Division
  Description This page is the site for the Historic Preservation Division of New Mexico. The web page includes lists of funding opportunities and related deadlines. It includes a information about obtaining archaeological permits in New Mexico and eligibility requirements for the National Registry of Historic Places (including a list of sites on the Registry). Forms, information about New Mexico state laws, and contact information are also included. The page is largely devoted to the legal end of conducting archaeological and historical research in New Mexico, and the available resources and applicable requirements associated with the state. Of particular interest is a county-by-county working list for determining which Native American Indian tribes want to be consulted for proposed projects in various geographic parts of New Mexico, and contact information for pueblos and reservations, available in the "Section 106" part of the site.

  Title San Juan Heritage
  Description This web project, authored and hosted by the San Juan School District in southeastern Utah, presents the "intertwining elements that make up the San Juan county area - be they plant, animal, landscape, or person." The project primarily focuses on Diné perspectives on the region, but Ute, Hispanic, and Anglo perspectives are also included. Of particular interest is the online exhibit, "Voices of Youth." Downloadable Navajo fonts are available at this site. The "San Juan Heritage" exhibit would be particularly useful to K-12 educators, though many might find it interesting.

  Title Society for the Study of American Indian Linguistics
  Description The Society for the Study of American Indian Linguistics (SSILA) is the international scholarly organization representing American Indian linguistics. The organization's web page provides access to the SSILA Bulletin, information about the organization's meeting, a database of relevant dissertations and journal articles, and funding and award information. Though not specific to the Southwest, the SSILA web site is a great resource for anyone interested in Native language studies.

  Title Southwest Indian Relief Council (SWIRC)
  Description “Southwest Indian Relief Council” is a National Relief Charities program working in New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada. The SWIRC site provides useful information on food and healthcare programs for Indian communities in the region. The site also provides information on the history and culture of individual native communities and a general overview of “Southwestern Indian History” that includes a brief account of federal Indian policies from 1845 to present, as they have affected American Indian peoples in the Southwest. (Information provided in tribes and “Southwest Indian History” pages is identical to that found in pages of “Southwest Indian People: Overview” http://www.cinprograms.org/people). The site also offers access to the SWIRC Newsletter, a Question & Answer page, and recommended sources on American Indian history, life, and federal Indian policies.

  Title Southwest Museum of the American Indian
  Description The Southwest Museum of the American Indian is located in Los Angeles, CA, and holds one of the nation's most important museum, library, and archive collections on Native cultures. Of particular interest is the "Online Collections" area which provides a searchable index of the museum's holdings. Though the museum collections are not specific to the Southwest, the early activities of the museum focused on archaeological expeditions in the Mimbres and Casa Grande areas, so many of their holdings are Southwestern in origin.

  Description The Home site for the Southwest Office of Native American Programs under the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.   Title The Arizona State Museum
  Description Established by the territorial government in 1893, the Arizona State Museum is an anthropological museum focusing on the peoples of Arizona and surrounding areas. The museum maintains an archive that contains many manuscripts, field records, maps, final reports artifacts, and the administrative records of the Museum. The museum collections and library holdings catalogs can be searched online; of particular interest is LARC, which includes the bibliographic collections of the ASM Library, Archives, Archaeological Records Office and the Archaeological Repository. The site provides information concerning legal issues and requirements for archaeological and ethnographic research; links to AZSite and other research resources; and a listing of upcoming events and programs.

  Description This is the official tribal web site of the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe in southwestern Colorado.   Title Words & Place: Native Literature from the American Southwest
  Description "Words and Place" provides online access to videos about Native American Southwestern songs and stories. Each program presents one American Indian singer, storyteller or author performing from his/her repertoire in a natural setting in the community. These videos were created for instructional use and have been used in classrooms around the country. The videotapes were produced at the University of Arizona in cooperation with KUAT-TV and funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
